Minister Seeks Language Requirements For Citizens
Calgary, Mar 21, 2009 - Federal minister Jason Kenney, speaking at the Metropolis Conference, says immigrants should be able to speak either English or French before seeking Canadian citizenship. While many immigration groups are pleased work is being done to help foreign-trained workers have their credentials recognized, some expressed concern about Kenney’s musing on additional language rules.

Calgary Agencies Struggle To Serve Immigrants’ Needs
Calgary, Mar 20, 2009 – Calgary agencies are being deluged with immigrants from other Canadian centres, but they’re struggling to serve newcomers’ needs under a federal funding formula that ties financial support to original ports of landing, according to a report issued by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Outrage Over PlanIt’s Commercial And Retail Report
Calgary, March 9, 2009 - A report commissioned by the city on commercial and retail policy recommends that Calgary should "avoid the development of 'Asian' malls that cater only to a specific ethnic group." The singling out the Asian communities in the report has angered some city residents who feel the recommendation is "misguided ethnic profiling."

 Calgary, March 7, 2009 -  New statistics suggest foreign doctors are an increasingly important resource as Alberta faces a severe physician shortage, with 40 per cent of new medical licences in the province going to physicians trained outside of Canada.

Foreign Doctors Being Wasted
 Calgary, March 7,209 - Alberta International Medical Graduate Association representatives said some subspecialists have more than five years of postgraduate training, plus work experience, and the province needs a better system to evaluate whether these doctors are ready to practise.

Minister Kenney Visits Bredin Institute, Announces Federal Support To Help Newcomers Settle In Edmonton
Edmonton, Alberta, March 6, 2009 - Immigrants in Edmonton will have access to more language training, employment assistance and information to help them integrate into the community, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today. These services are being delivered by four organizations, which will receive $2.3 million in federal funding. "Access to these kinds of services is, for many, a first step in establishing networks and contacts so they are engaged and feel welcomed in their communities," said Minister Kenney. "I would like to recognize the organizations that provide crucial support to those who choose Canada as their new home, helping to ease the stress of moving to a new country." The announcement was made at the Bredin Institute - Centre for Learning.

Budget 2009 – Action To Help Canadians And Stimulate Spending
Budget 2009 provides $50 million over the next two years to develop a common framework for national foreign credential recognition in partnership with provinces and territories. This funding will support the efforts of governments in the development of a common approach to foreign credential assessment and ensure that immigrants are better integrated into the Canadian labour force.

Immigration Levels Could Take Hit, Kenney Says
Ottawa, February 11, 2009 — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says the number of new arrivals to Canada could fall if labour markets contract and there are no jobs for them to fill. “Obviously we will monitor the economic situation and, if it's absolutely necessary, the government can always modify the targets. But it's our intention to maintain those targets where we are today,” Mr. Kenney told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

Minister Kenney Announces Appointments And Reappointments To The Immigration And Refugee Board Of Canada
Ottawa, January 23, 2009 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, today announced 13 full-time appointments and three reappointments to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). This is one of the largest number of appointments on a single day and demonstrates the Minister’s commitment to fill vacancies on the board with qualified individuals as quickly as possible. The number of vacancies has gone down from 48 to 32 to help reduce long wait times before the IRB, which adjudicates refugee claims.
