Upstart - Subsidy For After School Recreational Programs
This program promises to connect service providers with affordable facilities, to give children
and youth “things to do” and “places to go” during school rental periods - evenings and
weekends. UpStart recently received funding from the provincial government to establish a two-year pilot
project that will make it more affordable for groups that offer recreational activities for children
and youth to rent school facilities during evenings, weekends and holidays.
New Start: Immigrant Serving Agencies’ Perspective on the Issues and Needs of
Immigrant and Refugee Children and Youth in Canada
February, 2009 - It is estimated that approximately 60,000 immigrant and refugee children
and youth under 18 years old settle in Canada annually. A higher proportion,
over 40% or 4,000 refugee children and youth arrive as resettled refugees
annually. While there are marked differences between immigrant and refugee
children and youth (IRCY) many common needs and challenges emerge once in
Canada.
Immigrant and Refugee Children and Youth Needs Research Study
September, 2008 - FINAL REPORT - The purpose of this research project is to provide an analysis of the needs of immigrant and refugee children and youth in Alberta by developing a profile of immigrant and refugee children and youth in Alberta, researching the needs of immigrant and refugee children and youth, identifying gaps in research and preparing an inventory of programs available in Alberta.
Inventory of Programs and Services for Immigrant and Refugee Children and Youth

As part of the project “Immigrant and Refugee Child and Youth Needs Research Study”, Alberta Employment and Immigration contracted Emerging Directions Consulting Ltd. to develop an inventory of immigrant and refugee child and youth programs and servicesoperating in Alberta.
The process used to identify such programs and services was primarily through documents provided to the consultants by Employment and Immigration employees as well as an Internet search. In doing so, the terms “child” and “youth” were not restricted.
Enhancing Services and Supports for Immigrant Youth in Waterloo Region (2000) by Centre for Research and Education in Human Services
A study of the diverse settlement issues of immigrant youth (aged 16-20) within Waterloo region which develops strategies for supporting youth to address their issues. The research was part of a larger study that examined the settlement needs of immigrant youth in Ontario. |
